#97 Tom looked sheepishly at the floor. How was he supposed to explain this to his wife?

Tom looked sheepishly at the floor. How was he supposed to explain this to his  wife? He couldn’t believe that his boss phoned the house. “So,’ his wife asked in a bewildered tone “you put in two weeks’ notice at work?

His eyes averted hers. “I rescinded it,” he mumbled.

“But why did you do it, Tom?” She looked more  concerned than angry. The last thing he wanted to do was hurt her.

“I thought maybe could be the bat boy for the Indians.” The words sounded inexplicably ludicrous  as they fell from his mouth.

“Were they even hiring?” She asked. “and if they were, are you going to leave me to go traveling around on some low-paying job with a minor league baseball team?”

Tom shuffled around in his chair and stared at his feet. “I wasn’t thinking” he said. “They were very nice, they gave me a tour. Maybe that’s what I needed.”

His wife looked incredulous.at this point. “you ‘needed’ a tour of Victory Field?”

Tom let out a big sigh. There was no way around it now. He fell into a hush, almost a whisper and asked ” do you know what a delusion of grandeur is?” He could only pray that he could make his wife understand.
